Children & Youth with Special Needs

NOTICE:  Giving in Action expects to be able to provide Children and Youth with Special Needs (CYSN) grants throughout 2012. However, due to a backlog of applications and depleting funds, we will not accept new CYSN Letters of Inquiry (LOI) after May 31, 2012. All LOIs received on or before May 31st will be reviewed in order of receipt and considered based on eligibility and availability of funds.

Once we have reviewed all LOIs and applications in progress, and are able to assess our financial position, we will provide an update on remaining funds that may be available for new requests later in 2012.

The Children and Youth with Special Needs Fund (CYSN) provides grants to families who have children or youth (under 19) with special needs living at home.

The Fund offers one-time capital grants to help enhance or improve the individual’s health, development or ability to participate in daily activities at home, in school and in the community. Eligible expenses may include such things as home renovations and vehicle modifications.

Do I Qualify?

This Fund defines children and youth with special needs as those who have significant impairments in one or more of the following areas: health, cognition, communication, sensory motor, social/ emotional/behavioural or self help (adaptive). Qualified children should be eligible for supports through the Children and Youth with Special Needs branch of the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

The Children and Youth with Special Needs Fund helps address family needs that are not currently met through government-funded programs. Families receiving support from other government-funded programs are still eligible for CYSN grants; however, these funds must complement, not duplicate, that support.

This Fund was established with financial assistance from the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development and Vancouver Foundation donors.
